Long, John C.

A private family burial service is planned for Dr. John C. Long, 89, in Parklawn Memorial Garden under the direction of Wood Dunning Funeral Home with the Rev. Drew Travis, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Dr. Long died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002.

He was born Jan. 28, 1913, in Oak Park, Ill. to Bertha Kahn and John C. Long.
He received his bachelor?s and medical degrees from New York University and studied treatment for cancer and allied diseases at Cornell University. He trained at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City where he specialized in head and neck surgery as well as general and cancer surgery.

During World War II, he was a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from July 6, 1942, to Feb. 11, 1946, serving in the China-Burma Theater.

He married Dr. Dorothy Krause Feb. 1, 1942, in New York City. She died April 9, 2002. They moved to Plainview in 1950 where he was a general surgeon until his retirement in 1994.

Dr. Long was an active member in both the First Presbyterian Church and St. Mark?s Episcopal Church. He was recipient of the first Cotton Barons? Award presented by the Hale County unit of the American Cancer Society. He served as medical officer for the ACS for more than 35 years.

He was a member of the Plainview Rodeo Association and a supporter YMCA and a longtime member of the local YMCA board of directors.

Long served as an associate clinical professor of surgery at Texas Tech University School of Medicine. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow at the American College of Surgery, a member of the Society of Head and Neck Surgery, the International College of Surgeons, Pan Pacific Surgical Society and the Lubbock Surgical Society.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. John and Julie Long of Detroit, Mich.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Nina and Tim Wiseley of Yakima, Wash., Barbara Long of Mountain View, Calif., and Patty Fonville of Martindale, TX; six grandchildren, John Wiseley, Laura Wiseley, Cailin Mackenzie, Steven Fonville, Benjamin Long and Daniel Long.

The family suggests memorials to the YMCA After School Program or the American Cancer Society.
The family expresses special thanks to Carol Taylor and Ruth Bramlett who loved and nurtured Dr. Dorothy Long and Dr. John Long, their children and grandchildren.
