Obituary

Lynnvel Derwood King, 70, passed away Jan. 28, 2008, following a sudden illness. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday Jan. 31, 2008, at Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel in Plainview, Texas. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. For more than 50 years, Lynnvel was known throughout the community as a floor covering installer. Most recently, he worked as assistant store manager at King Carpet Plus, Inc. His humor and knowledge were appreciated by his customers and friends alike. He passed his expertise and skill on to many others, as well as owned and operated several floor covering stores in Plainview. A lifelong resident of Plainview, Lynnvel was active for many years in the REACT Storm Spotters. He enjoyed circle track and drag racing with his friends and passed that legacy on to his son, Ricky. He was born in Davidson, Okla., on Oct. 23, 1937, and moved to Plainview in 1943. He married Wanda Jo Shipley in Aug. 17, 1957, and had two children, Ricky and Stacy. Wanda passed away after 26 years of marriage. He then married Gaile Word on Nov. 23, 1984. Survivors include his wife, Gaile King; son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Teressa King and their son, Ty, of Plainview; daughter and son-in-law, Stacy and Larry Hobbs and their children, Christa and Levi, of Moody, Texas; two stepdaughters, Kathy and Bobby Kernell of Plainview and grandson, Shawn Brown of San Marcos, and Sandra and Dr. T. Coe Branch and granddaughter, Rebecca Cross of Plainview; one sister and brother-in-law, Norma and George Fischer of Amarillo; and one brother and sister-in-law, W.T. (Dub) and Betty King of Hart. Lynnvel had numerous nieces and nephews who also loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Thomas (Tom) King and Allie Dickerson; wife, Wanda Jo King; sister, Marie Krimmer; and grandson, Trevor Lynn King. A visitation for family and friends will be at Kornerstone Funeral Directors from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008. The family suggests memorials be made to the American Heart Association, 3411 73rd St., Lubbock, TX 79423, or to a favorite charity. Lynnvel will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
