Obituary

Elizabeth Hinds, 98, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2015, in Plainview, Texas. A memorial reception is pending and will be held at a later date under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors in Plainview, Texas.
Elizabeth was born on July 27, 1916, in Sherman, Texas, to William and Laura Blalock. Her childhood and early adult years were spent in Brownwood, Texas, where she graduated from high school in 1933. At an early age she joined the Austin Avenue Presbyterian Church where she later taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir.
After attending Texas Tech and Daniel Baker College, she graduated with a degree in teaching in 1936 and started her teaching career in Winters, Texas, that same year. While there she met and married Joe V. Hinds in February of 1941. They lived in San Francisco until 1949 when they moved to Plainview. Joe V. passed away in 1959 and she stayed in Plainview to continue teaching. When the Migrant Program started, she was the first teacher and she was also appointed by Gov. Preston Smith to serve on the Professional Practice Commission. While teaching in Plainview, she started the girls' golf program and was their coach until she retired in 1982. After giving up golf, she concentrated on Duplicate Bridge and became a Bronze Life Master. She was a charter member of the Plainview Duplicate Bridge Group that started in 1954. She was also a member of Tri Delta Sorority, Plainview Country Club and First Presbyterian Church of Plainview.
She enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S.A. and parts of Europe. Something unusual always happened on one of her trips and it made for a fun time to hear her tell of these events. She was an avid sports fan. Texas Tech Football was especially important to her and in 2009 at the Texas Tech vs. Texas A&M football game in Lubbock, she was recognized and honored for her loyalty. She seldom missed a game for 55 years.
She is survived by her nephew Tom Coyle of Miami, Florida, and two cousins.
The family and friends would like to thank the staff of Area Community Hospice and Plainview Healthcare Center for all their support and help. A special thank you goes to Mary Zavala, Josie Zavala and Gina Hernandez who watched over Liz.
Memorials may be made to The Elizabeth Hinds Presidential Merit Scholarship at Texas Tech University c/o Brian Pohlmeier at Centennial Bank or the Scholarship of Grace at First Presbyterian Church in Plainview, Texas. .Funeral Home
