Obituary

Joe Hernandez, 60, passed away Monday, July 4, 2011, in Amarillo. Funeral services will be at 2:05 p.m. Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Genesis Baptist Church with the Rev. Carlos Hinojos, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. A memorial service will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at the funeral home. Joe was born Feb. 5, 1951, to Manuel and Guadalupe Hernandez in Cuero, Texas. He grew up in Olton and graduated from Olton High School in 1969. He served in the U.S. Army from 1971-72. He married Elizabeth Perez on June 7, 1974, in Plainview. He graduated from the South Plains Law Enforcement School in 1976 and served as a police officer on the Plainview Police Department from 1976-78. He was licensed as a Baptist minister in 1977 and was ordained in 1993. He was a bi-vocational minister working in Garland, Hereford, Lockney, Abernathy and Plainview. They moved to Garland in 1978 and he worked as a manager for Pep Boys and built fences. They returned to Hereford in 1991 and to Plainview in 1995. He graduated from Wayland Baptist University with a degree in physical education and history in 1998 and with a master's degree in counseling in 2007. He was a teacher/coach at Kress and a teacher at Plainview and Olton. They attended Genesis Baptist Church in Plainview. He was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Guadalupe Hernandez; and a brother, Martin Hernandez. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Hernandez of Plainview; one daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Heather and Shane Martinez of Plain?view; one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Heather Calderon Hernandez II of Plainview; his grandson, Zachariah Rhayne Martinez of Plainview; three brothers, Raymond Hernandez of Weatherford, Paul Hernandez of Lavon and Jon Hernandez of Bastrop; three half-brothers, Pedro Hernandez of Kingsville, Silverio Hernandez of Baldwin Park, Calif., and Margarito Hernandez of Muleshoe; and five sisters, Hilaria Garcia of Garland, Frances Alirez of Olton, Lupe Contreras of Amarillo, Paulie Ibarra of Garland and Maria Luisa Guerrero of Plainview.
