Obituary
Funeral services for Bennie Jean Bybee Hayes, 73, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, in Garland Street Church of Christ with Gene Glaeser officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens under direction of Lemons Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Hayes passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at her residence. She was born May 3, 1931, in Lockney, to Walter and Cora Edna Hamilton Bybee. She was raised in Quanah, Lockney and Floydada where she graduated as salutatorian of the Class of 1948. She married John Henry Hayes on March 14, 1959, in Plainview. He preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 1987. Jean was a faithful member and Bible school teacher at Garland Street Church of Christ and was a homemaker. During her earlier years, she was employed as a telephone operator at Bell Telephone Company, and became a dental assistant to the late Dr. D.O. Hollingsworth of Plainview. After marriage, she worked alongside her husband in farming, at DJ's Auto Salvage and at John Henry's Lawnmower as a bookkeeper. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Oscar M. Bybee; a sister, Edna Corene Haynes; her father-in-law, Henry Hampton Hayes; and her mother-in-law, Eula Van Dalsem Hayes. Jean is survived by a daughter, Nancy Mabry and husband Sam, of Sulphur Springs; a son, Dr. Hank Hayes and wife, Karey of Sulphur Springs; three grandchildren, Nathan Mabry, Melissa Hayes and Leah Hayes, all of Sulphur Springs; two sisters, Juanita Teaff of Lubbock and Cheryl Stack of Wichita Falls; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Howard and Faye Hayes of Plainview; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Weldon and Helen Hayes of Childress; her sister-in-law, Myrtle Bybee of Springfield, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or The Lubbock Children's Home.
