Obituary

Funeral services for Dr. Herman J. Harvis, 90, of Plainview, will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, in First Baptist Church Chapel. Officiating will be Dr. Travis Hart, pastor. Interment will be in Plainview Memorial Park by Bartley Funeral Home. Dr. Harvis died Aug. 9, 2004, at Plainview Healthcare Center. He was born Feb. 12, 1914, in Chicago, Ill. On May 25, 1947, he married Doris Spann in San Fernando, Calif. They had lived in Plainview since 1951, coming from California. He was a graduate of Chicago Medical School and owned his own clinic in Plainview from 1952-88. He was a member of the American Medical Association College of Family Practice, member of 213th Civil Affairs Unit in Lubbock, Texas, active in the Retired Officers Group in Lubbock and served with the College of Practitioners. Dr. Harvis served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942-45 with the Army Medical Corps, in the South Pacific, New Guinea and in the Philippines. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Plainview since 1954. He was past president and former lieutenant governor of Plainview Chapter of Kiwanis Club. He was a champion swimmer of his Army Reserve Unit and loved classical music. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Doris Harvis, of the home; two daughters, Daphne Manz of Plainview and Deborah Pursley and husband, Ray of Duncanville; and one grandchild, Matt Pursley of Duncanville. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at Bartley Funeral Home.
