Graveside services for Evelyn Harmel, 87, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Plainview Memorial Park with the Rev. Gordon Benson, pastor of First Baptist Church in Halfway, officiating. Burial arrangements are by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. Mrs. Harmel died at noon Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, in Hi-Plains Nursing Home in Hale Center. She was born June 8, 1914, in Seymour, Mo., where she grew up and graduated from high school. She moved to the Happy Union Community and then to Halfway in 1950 and farmed. She moved to Plainview in 1984. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Halfway and the Hale County Senior Citizens Center in Plainview. On April 25, 1937, she married Oliver Harmel in Roswell, N.M. He died Dec. 19, 1983. Survivors include special
friends, Neilan and Martha Smith and Sonny and Freddie Mae Williams, all of Plainview; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Aubrey and Mary Harmel of Elkland, Mo., and Ora Mae White of Corpus Christi; and nieces and nephews, Jo Frances Roberts of Kaneake, Hawaii, Sue Pitts of Springfield, Mo., Mack Harmel and Joel H. Culp, both of Plainview, Marilyn Neill of Buffalo, Wyo., Mike Whittacre of Sulphur Springs, David Whittacre of New York City, N.Y., Lorie Whittacre of Overland Park, Kan., and Karen Whittacre of Oklahoma City, Okla. Two sons are deceased. J.R. Harmel, died Oct. 30, 1985 and Buddy Harmel died Dec. 23, 1962. The family suggests memorials to First Baptist Church in Halfway.
