Funeral services for A.W. "Bub" Hammit, 84, were at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Hale Center with Dr. Carrol Green and Dr. Gene Meacham officiating. Burial was in Plainview Cemetery by Abell Funeral Home of Hale Center. Mr. Hammit died Saturday, May 30, 2009, in the Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Home in Amarillo. He was born Jan. 29, 1925, in Stamford to Metta and Gene Hammit. He joined the Navy in 1942 and was a World War II veteran. He was a pharmacist's mate stationed in the Admiralty Islands near Papua, New Guinea. He married Mildred Rieff on Jan. 4, 1948, in Cotton Center. He was a partner with his dad in the grocery business and farmed in Hale Center. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hale Center and was a deacon for many years. Survivors include his wife; one daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Eddie Turner of Plainview; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Pat Hammit of Canyon; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. His parents and brother, Kenneth Hammit, are deceased. The family suggests memorials to Plainview Christian Academy, 310 S.
