Obituary

Services for Zelma Jay Hale, 87, of Lubbock, Texas, and formerly of Abernathy, Texas, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 11, 2012, in the Abernathy First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ted Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy, Texas. Mrs. Hale died Monday, June 4, 2012, at her home in Lubbock, Texas. Zelma was born June 6, 1924, in Roby, Texas, to Clifton Marion and Clara (Neeley) Jay. She married John Wayland Hale on April 14, 1946, in Roby after graduating from Roby High School and attending McMurry College. John preceded her in death May 4, 1999. The Hales moved to Abernathy in 1954 from Houston, Texas, to begin John's dental practice. Zelma became involved in the 1935 Study Club, Book Club, and the Bridge Club. She was a longtime member of the Abernathy First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir. She was also a member of the Hillcrest Country Club, where she was an active member of the Women's Golf Association. Zelma moved to Lubbock in 2004. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde Jay and Joe Jay, and three sisters, Lora Mae Pollard, Helen Springer, and her twin sister, Thelma Stuart. She is survived by a son, Pat Hale and wife Nancy of Dallas, Texas; a grandson, Chris Hale and wife Isadora of Tucson, Ariz., and their children, Summer and Chloe; and one granddaughter, Amanda Degard and husband Chris of Dallas, Texas. She is also survived by her two stepgrandchildren, Thomas Hammer, and Nancy Owen and husband David, and their children, Grace and Doug, all of Dallas; one sister, Robbie Carlton and husband Paul of Glendale, Calif.; sister-in-law, Kathryn Jay of Rowlett, Texas; brother-in-law, Sam Hale of Lubbock; and many nieces and nephews.
