Obituary

Eddie Joe Guffee, 70, of Plainview passed away Saturday, June 7, 2008, in Midland, Texas. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel with Dr. Max Browning officiating. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. Mr. Guffee was born Jan. 22, 1938, in Plainview. He grew up in Plainview and graduated from Kress High School. He received his F.C.C. from Elkins Electronic Institute in 1956. He then received his B.S. from West Texas State University in 1973 and his M.A. in 1976. He majored in history and archeology. He also studied the Comanche Language in Lawton, Okla. Mr. Guffee farmed from 1958 to 1974 before going to work for Wayland Baptist University from 1974 until 2004. He was assistant professor of earth science, history, archeology and Spanish. He was the director of the Museum of the Llano Estacado and the director of the Taos Center of Creative Arts. He was a member of the Company of Military Historians, Council of Texas Archeologists, Texas Archeology Society, Society of Professional Archeologists, Panhandle Archeology Society, Northwest Texas Museum Association where he served as vice president and secretary, Hale County Historical Commission, Castro County Historical Commission and the Hale County Farm and Ranch Museum where he served on the organizational committee. He married Patricia Beggs on Feb. 25, 1960, in Plainview. Survivors include his wife, Patti Guffee of Plainview; and uncle and aunt, Ed and Dorothy Neff of Floydada. He was preceded in death by a son, Eddie Joe Guffee Jr., in 2007 and by his parents, Edgar and Lillian Guffee.
