Obituary

Annie Mae Grayson, 98, of Amarillo died Monday, Oct. 1, 2012. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Plainview Memorial Park Cemetery in Plainview with the Rev. D.D. Fincher officiating. Arrangements are by Warford-Walker Mortuary, 509 N. Hughes St. Ms. Grayson was born Dec. 6, 1913, on a cold, wintry day in Hillsboro as the fifth child to Thomas Bullock Bullord and Alice Williams Bullock. The family moved to Atoka County, Okla., where she attended Boggy Elementary School and middle school in McAlester, Okla. She worshiped at the Methodist church of her parents' faith. She joined and was baptized to the fellowship of Whitehall Baptist Church in Atoka County. There, she was active in Sunday school and Mission Outreach. In 1931, Ms. Grayson married Willie Bongord Grayson. To this union two children were born, Pearlene and Lois. The family moved to Plainview in 1942 and became members of Mount Olive Baptist Church, now United Baptist Church, where their missions work continued. Her greatest award from the city of Plainview was knowing she had helped someone. She has cared for a number of nieces, nephews and community children as live-ins, including a niece, Alice Lawson, and a nephew, Kenneth Wright. She has been a mother to many and provided financial aid to several who wanted to go to college. Ms. Grayson was a naturalist. She loved vegetable gardening, which she shared with the community, and flower gardening for the beauty they bring. She received awards from the city of Plainview for her beautiful yard. She was preceded in death by her parents, 11 siblings and a daughter. Survivors include a daughter, Pearlene Grason Martin and husband Grover; a grandson, Grover Martin; a granddaughter, Lois Martin Johnson and husband Dr. Theodore; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family suggests memorials be to Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., Seventh Floor, New York, NY 10001; Youth Department of Jenkins Chapel, 1801 N. Hughes St., Amarillo, TX 79107; Development Department, 4805 Mount Hope Drive, Baltimore MD 21215; Prince-Princess Review, Order of Calanthe; and Miss Blue Review, Zeta Phi Beta sorority. Visitation will be from 5-6 p.m. today and a memorial celebration will follow from 6- 7 p.m. at the funeral home with D.D. Fincher officiating.
