Mrs. Goodson was born Feb. 20, 1924, in Freestone County, Wortham, Texas, to Elijah & Lillie Kate (Gordon) George and grew up in Wortham, Texas. She moved to Plainview where she met Johnnie Goodson while they were both employed at the Hilton Hotel when it was in its prime. They were married on May 27, 1947, in Plainview, Texas. Bessie was baptized in 1953 and was a faithful member of the Austin Heights (former Ash and Carver) Church of Christ until her death. She was the oldest member of the church. Bessie was an inspirational leader and encourager of the church and its activities. The Austin Heights Ladies Day was an annual event that brought ladies from the surrounding area together for a worship and learning. In June the event celebrated its 27th year. Even though this was the first one she had missed, at the age of 91, Bessie still provided ideas and encouragement for the leaders. Before her retirement, Bessie had been employed at Vanderpoel Jewelry and Nan's Dress Shop, as well as other places for many years. Bessie touched the lives of many families in this community and became a self-appointed, and well-loved, "nanny" to all their children. She touched many lives with both her sense of humor and nurturing care of others. She was a superb cook and shared her signature dishes with many friends in the community. Bessie was preceded in death by her parents and husband Johnnie Goodson, She is survived by her stepdaughter Gwen Lemons of Dallas; a brother-in-law Herb Steward and wife Rhoda of Plainview and some cousins. Memorials can be made to the charity of your choice. Online Condolences may be made at www.lemonsfuneral.com.
