Obituary
Fred F. Gilbert, 97, passed away Sunday July, 18, 2010, in Plainview. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at Lemons Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Kyle Brock, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the direction of Lemons Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at the funeral home. Fred was born April 30, 1913, to Elzy and Mary Gilbert in Amarillo, Texas. His first late wife, Myrtle Schrimsher, passed away in 1939. In his early years he enjoyed playing the fiddle at dances and playing baseball on a men's team in Halfway and Plainview. He farmed until 1947 when he moved to Plainview and worked for Sears-Roebuck as an electronics repair technician. He retired from there in the early-1970s. His second wife, Mary Belle Carrell, passed away in 1985. He liked to fly radio-controlled airplanes and enjoyed electronics and music. He loved to travel the lower 48 states by motor home and also traveled to Alaska, Canada, Hawaii and Europe. In his spare time he liked to play dominoes and bridge. He was a member of Knife and Fork, Good Sam and Plainview Pioneer Amateur Radio Association, operating under call sign W5PIP. He attended the Methodist Church in Halfway and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He is survived by two sons, Col. Kenneth L. Gilbert of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Wayne Gilbert of Plainview; one sister, Cora Ann Fletcher of Plainview; four grandchildren, Kathy Dominquez, Karen Miller, Russell Gilbert and Michael Paul Gilbert; and five great-grandchildren.
