Funeral services for Luther "Jiggs" Gentry, 82, will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Lemons Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Tolson of Good Samaritan Out-reach Pentecostal Church of God officiating.

Cremation arrangements were by Lemons Funeral Home.

Mr. Gentry died at 7:33 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, in Crosbyton.

He was born March 24, 1921, in Van Buren, Ark. He grew up on a farm near Alma, Ark., and graduated from Kibler High School in Kibler, Ark.

He served in the army in World War II and landed on the beaches of Normandy, was in the battle of the Bulge and went on to Berlin where his unit linked with the Russian Army. After the war, he moved to Norwalk, Calif., and worked as a foreman for the Kelco Company for 27 years. He retired in 1987 and moved to Plainview and worked for Wal-mart in the gardening center for five year. He later worked for Laidlaw Transportation before retiring in April due to ilness.

On Oct. 7, 1957, he married Louise Paine in Van Buren. She died Sept. 28, 1996.

Survivors include a son-in-law and his wife, Jerry and Imagene Newberry of Crosbyton; a sister, Wanda "Dolly" Crabtree of Alma; nine grandchildren, Dr. Joni L. Carmack, Joyce Epperson, Stacy L. Fox, Adrian C. "Del" Newberry, Samantha Gentry Gardner, Adam Gentry Newberry, Kathy Hill, Norman Hill, and Ken LeFevre; and great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Sammie Newberry, died in 1994; and a son, Joe Hill, died in 2002. Two brothers, J.W. Gentry and Bill Gentry; a sister Lucille Oliver; and a grandson, Mike Hill, are also deceased.
