Obituary

Funeral services for J.O. "Hap" Garner, 86, of Kress will be at 3 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church Chapel in Plainview with Dr. Kelly Warren and Dr. Travis Hart officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park by Lemons Funeral Home. Family visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. today at Lemons Funeral Home. Mr. Garner died Friday, Feb. 23, 2007 at Running Water Draw Care Center in Olton. He was born Aug. 11, 1920, in Hemphill County to John T. Garner and Ada Belle Cantrell Garner. He joined the Navy on March 9, 1942, and served on many different ships, including the UCC Chicago which sank after being bombed. Garner was one of the few survivors and helped rescue others. He married Genevieve Davidson on May 8, 1943, in San Francisco. Survivors include his wife of Claytonville; three daughters, Sheryl Lindeman and husband Karl of Claytonville, Judy Bertelson and husband Steve of Claytonville and Janis Jones and husband Larry of Plainview; three sisters, Roberta Carter of Dumas, Cleta Carroll of Brownfield and Avenell Armstrong and husband J.C. of Plainview; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents and one son, Michael Floyd Garner, are deceased. The family asks in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
