Obituary

A funeral Mass for Maria Lionor "Nellie" Garcia, 83, of Hale Center will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Theresa Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Hale Center Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home of Hale Center. The family will have a viewing at St. Theresa Catholic Church today from 2-8 p.m., followed by rosary services at 8 p.m. Mrs. Garcia died Thursday, June 4, 2009, at University Medical Center in Lubbock. She was born Feb. 24, 1926, in Abernathy. She married Selso Garcia Sr. on May 17, 1948, in Clovis, N.M. He died on March 16, 2006. She was an active member of St. Theresa Catholic Church where she served as communion minister, lector, treasurer, member of the Guadalupanas, and taught baptismal classes and marriage counseling. She is survived by nine sons, Selso Garcia Jr. of Hobbs, N.M., David Garcia of Plainview, Gene Garcia of Lubbock, Rudy Garcia of San Angelo, John Garcia of Harker Heights, Texas, Alvin Garcia of Amarillo, Andrew Garcia of Barto, Pa., Joe Garcia and Raymond Garcia of Hale Center; five daughters, Christina Martinez of Cedar Hill, Texas, Vicki Garcia of Lubbock, Patsy Gomez of Canyon, Mary Ramon of Hale Center and Lionora Olvera of Plainview; 50 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Annie Lucero of Clovis, N.M., Ramon Simpson of Temple, Texas, and Frances Hinojosa of Lubbock. Three grandchildren, Toby Garcia, Seanda Garcia and Nicholas Garcia, are deceased.
