Obituary

Luther W. Foust, 92, passed away Jan. 27, 2010, in Plainview, Texas. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at Wood Dunning Memorial Chapel. Family and friends will be welcomed from 3-5 p.m. today, Jan. 31 at Wood Dunning Funeral Home. Luther was born Dec. 24, 1917, to Walter and Anne Foust in Ames, Texas. After being raised on the family farm, he served in the United States Army, enlisting in 1942. He fought in World War II, serving as a medic, and was transferred to The Solomon Islands after serving in Guadalcanal. He was stationed in New Caldonia and New Zealand. After receiving an honorable discharge, he returned home to the states in 1944. He married Pearl J. Prachar from Summerfield, Texas, in October 1944. She died Feb. 1, 1984. They moved to Lubbock where they had their first son, Walter Jr., in September 1945. They moved to Plainview, Texas, where he owned and operated a Gulf station on East Fifth St. Later he was employed by the Texas Highway Department, serving as a resident engineer and then as a chief inspector over highway construction, retiring in 1982. For several years, the Fousts attended Trinity United Methodist Church, where Pearl taught Sunday school. In 1953 another son, Ray Don, was born. He died in 1954. Luther had several hobbies and was always trying to help his fellow man. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, basketball and football. He had the ability to play a piano by sight-reading and by playing along with other music. His favorite pastime was working puzzles, often making his own. He was an outstanding friend and helper who will be missed. Luther married Margaret Witkowski on Dec. 1, 1986. She died in January 2004. He is survived by one son, Walter Foust Jr. of Lubbock; one brother, Herman Foust of Clifton, Texas; one sister, Ruby Young of Jonesboro, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
