Obituary

Hazel Flowers, 80, passed away Monday, May 10, 2010, in Canyon. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at First United Methodist Chapel with the Rev. John F. McClean, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Canyon, officiating. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the direction of Lemons Funeral Home. Family will receive friends at Lemons Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. today, May 11, 2010. Miss Flowers was born Sept. 17, 1929, in Quitaque, Texas, the fifth daughter of Henry M. and Alma Gore Flowers. After graduating from Plainview High School in 1948, Hazel attended Watson Business College. She then worked for the Hale County Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service, USDA, for 36 years where she retired on Oct. 26, 1984. After retirement from ASCS, she worked part-time in the office of the big elevator north of Plainview, Continental Grain Co. Hazel then moved to Canyon in 2005 and lived at the Palo Duro Retirement Village and enjoyed the friendship of all the people in the village as well as all the games, puzzles and garage sales. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Plainview and Canyon. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #37, Plainview and Canyon, member of National Association Retired Federal Employees #743 of Plainview, Plains Art Association, Hi-Plains Genealogical Society, Hale County Historical Commission, Plainview Community Concerts, Organ Guild, Musical Arts Club, Hale County Senior Citizens Center, Turf Turners Garden Club, Circles of the FUMC in Plainview and Canyon, and Canyon's Class Red Hat Club. She enjoyed many years in the Hand in Hand Sunday School Class at FUMC in Plainview and Canyon and playing the organ and piano at the Sunday school class and was the organist in OEA in Plainview for 20 years. Survivors include nieces and nephews, Mr. and Mrs. A.A. (Sue) Thomas Jr. of Canyon, Mrs. Sherry Day Foster of Livingston, the Rev. Tom Price of Kerrville, Patsy DeMent of West Lynn, Ore.; and great-nieces and nephews, Kimberley and Keith Rutherford, Brian and Charlotte Thomas, Kelly and Mark Vogler, Tommie Sue Whittington, Corey and Kendra Thomas, Chris Peterson, Don Peterson, David Peterson, Stephen Price, Brendon Price, Sharon Hyland and Katy DeMent. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Lucile Flowers, Ruby Lena DeMent, Mamie Day and Ione Crossland; and nieces and nephews, John S. Day, Dr. Lewis E. DeMent and Rachel DeMent Price.
