Funeral services for John Wesley Downey, 85, of Halfway were at 2 p.m. today in Lemons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Williams, pastor of First Baptist Church of Lorenzo, officiating. Burial was in Plainview Memorial Park by Lemons Funeral Home. Mr. Downey died at 2:40 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, in Plainview. He was born May 16, 1919, in Frost, Texas where he grew up and graduated from high school. He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force before becoming a farmer in the Halfway community. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Halfway where he taught a men's Sunday school class and served as a deacon. He married Irene Hall on March 11, 1943, in Tucson, Ariz. Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Norma Downey of Halfway; two grandchildren, David Downey and wife, Karen, of Lubbock and Lori McCrory and husband, Scott, of Allen; four great-grandchildren, Bethany, Dexter, Nicholas and Nathan Downey; and two nieces, Linda Ehle of Greeley, Colo., and Betty Horan of Plainview. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nena Caudle and Kathleen Pape.
