Obituary
Funeral services for Mary Appling Davis, 82, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church with Dr. Max Browning, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. Mrs. Davis died at 4:37 p.m. Saturday, May 15, 2004, in Covenant Hospital in Lubbock. She was born Aug. 7, 1922, in Italy in Ellis County to Palmer H. and Carrie Hinds Appling. She graduated from Slaton High School in 1939 and from Texas Tech University in 1943. She was an elementary school teacher prior to her marriage to Dr. Jeff H. Davis on Sept. 2, 1947. They moved to Plainview in 1953 after he finished medical school. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and an active member of the Wesley Bible Class. She was instrumental in starting a Head Start program in the school system to teach Spanish speaking children. Survivors include her husband; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Bill Macrum and Cindy and David Graham, both of San Antonio; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian Jeff and Diane Davis of San Antonio; one sister, Elouise Jones of Lubbock; three brothers, Pat Appling of Lubbock, Don Appling of Plainview and Jon Appling of Kerrville; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Edward K. and Connie Davis of Conroe; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Her parents; a brother, Rev. W.A. Appling; and one sister, Melba Harris, are deceased. The family suggests memorials to First United Methodist Church.
