Obituary

Davis, James Lee (J.L.), Mrs. (Nora May Lane Baker)

Nora was born in North Carolina during the Civil War to William P Lane and his wife Isabell. Mr. Lane had lost part of his right arm at the Battle of Chichamauga in 1863 while serving in Co.E of the 39th North Carolina Infantry Regiment, Confederate forces. By the 1880 Census the family had moved to Colbert Co. in northern Alabama. Later they moved to the Grayson County area of Texas. About 1883 Nora married William Preston Baker (1855-abt1888) and this union produced 2 children, Willie Samuel Baker (1885-1981) and Mollie Baker Combs (1888-1959). About the time of Mollie's birth or shortly thereafter, Nora's husband William Preston Baker died. It is believed they were living in the Galveston Texas area at the time. Later, about 1893, Nora married James Lee "J.L." Davis who was living in the Grayson County area. This marriage added 2 more children to the Davis household which already included several children from his previous marriage. In addition, J.L.'s and Nora's union produced an additional 7 children. So, Nora became the woman of the house for a rather large number of children and Mr. Davis assumed the support of a very large family group.
