Obituary
Funeral services for Lois Young Haggard Culp, 88, will be at 1 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church Family Life Chapel with the Rev. G.A. Magee, retired minister of Midland, officiating. Burial will be Plainview Cemetery by Kornerstone Funeral Directors. Mrs. Culp died at 2 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, 2005 in Northwood Health Care Center in Marble Falls. She was born Jan. 3, 1917, in Plainview, the daughter of Samuel Jackson and Maude Baughman Young, who were early pioneers to Hale County. She grew up northwest of Plainview and then moved to the Happy Union community, attending the Ellen Community School. She played basketball and graduated from Plainview High School in 1933. She married Lynn Harry Haggard on May 2, 1934. They farmed in the Happy Union community and were members of the Happy Union Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher. After Lynn's death on June 27, 1958, she moved into Plainview in January 1959 and worked for many years at Kristi's in downtown Plainview. Lois was an avid Wayland Baptist University Flying Queens fan. She married Joel Emil Culp on May 6, 1972, and they enjoyed traveling and trips to Matagorda, Texas, where they had a passion for fishing. Mrs. Culp remained in Plainview after Joel's death on Sept. 24, 1991, until March 25, 2004, when she moved to Marble Falls to be near her daughters. She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Haggard Condon of Austin and Patricia Haggard Smith and husband, Paul, of Horseshoe Bay; two stepchildren, Joel H. Culp and wife, Sonja, of Plainview and Marilyn Culp Neill and husband, Bob, of Buffalo, Wyo.; one brother, S.J. Young and wife, Opal, of Lubbock; one sister, Alama Young Smith of Townsend, Ga.; two grandchildren, Kelly Lynn Herod and wife, Missy, of Golden, Colo.; Stephen Paul Smith and wife, Jennifer, of Aubrey; four stepgrandchildren, Amber Kamps and husband, Steve, of Lincoln, Mont., Justin Neill and wife, Joni, of Oakdale, Minn., Paul Wilkins and wife, Lori, of Plainview and Dan Wilkins and wife, Rachel, of Corinth; 12 great-grandchildren; five nieces and two nephews; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Louise and Gordon Stanford of Kingsland; and many very special extended family and friends. Her husbands, Lynn Harry Haggard and Joel Culp; a daughter, Linda Haggard Herod Sassman; two brothers, Virgil Young and Marvin Young; a sister, Elsie Young Maxey; and one stepgrandson, Dutch Culp, are deceased.
