Obituary

Ida V. Carthel, age 91, passed away Aug. 3, 2011, in Plainview. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, at the Northwest Church of Christ in Plainview. Interment will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the direction of Lemons Funeral Home. Ida V. (Mixon) Carthel was born March 13, 1920, to Curtis Lee and Carrah Idell (Abercrombie) Mixon in Ogburn (Wood County), Texas. Ida V. grew up around Salisbury and Memphis. She attended public school there and graduated from Memphis High School in 1940. Her dream was to become a nurse and help others, so she began her three years of nursing training at Plainview School of Nursing. In 1943 she received her R.N. degree. Her nursing experience ranged from working in the polio ward, operating room, delivery room and private duty. Later she was a supervisor of nurses at Central Plains Regional Hospital, now known as Covenant Hospital Plainview. She retired in 1979 after 36 years of serving others to spend more time with her family and to enjoy her hobbies of quilting, sewing and ceramics. She married Baynard Carthel on Oct. 24, 1942, in Portales, N.M. After 45 years of marriage, Baynard preceded her in death in 1987. She was a member of Northwest Church of Christ and enjoyed the Senior Citizens Center in Plainview. Ida V. is survived by her daughter, Patsy Havis and husband Glen of Plainview; her son, Bill Carthel and his wife Pat of Silverton; four grandchildren, Thad Carthel and his wife Jennifer of Tulsa, Okla.; Tania (Carthel) Halbleib and husband Darin of Plainview; Tonya (Havis) Esquibel of Arlington, Texas; Melanie (Havis) Ochoa and her husband Felix of Arlington, Texas; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one sister, Gladys Turner of Sacramento, Calif. Other family members to precede her in death were her parents; four sisters, Clara Gene Gales, Eula Mae Richards, Norene McBrayer and Dorothy Mixon; three brothers, Leon, V.O. and Otis Mixon; and one granddaughter Andrea Carthel.
