Obituary

Mayesie L. Burke, 83, of Plainview passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, in Plainview. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at Plainview Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. A family visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at the funeral home. Mayesie was born on Aug. 3, 1930, in Bangs, Texas, to Nellie Mae Tesson Mathews and Roy L. Mathews. She married Harvey John Burke on Dec. 21, 1952, in Bangs. He preceded her in death on March 10, 2000. She graduated as valedictorian at Bangs High School in 1947 and from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas, in 1951. She taught for awhile at Central School in Plainview. She was a life member of Texas PTA and a member of Chapter BL of P.E.O. She was an active band parent and on the board of Senior Citizens. Mayesie was a long-time member of First Baptist Church and, more recently, a member of Northwest Church of Christ. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Powell and husband Don of Bangs, and Karen Miller and husband Hugh J. of Barwise; nine grandchildren, Allan Herring of San Diego, Mark Herring of Plainview, Leah Valdez and husband George of Brownwood, Erika Goodman and husband Clint of Bridgeport, Texas, Laura Jarrell and husband Christopher of Amarillo, Rachel Wells and husband Jared of Amarillo, Mathew Miller and wife Candace of Lockney, Gabriel Miller and Katie Miller of Barwise; nine great-grandchildren, Levi, Cole, Jax and Macy Goodman, Jacob Jarrell and Ty, Taryn, Bethany and Kyle Wells; one brother, Dr. Roy Clyde Mathews and wife Betty of Sherwood, Ark. She was also preceded in death by her parents. She dearly loved all of her precious family and her friends. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Mission Fund, 205 W.
