David Bryant was born in Shreveport, LA October 3, 1942. He moved to Plainview with his parents in 1949 and graduated from Plainview High School in 1961. He served as photographer for the Plain View yearbook. He also worked for Koen's Studio and the Herald. He attended the University of Houston. He returned to Plainview in 1963 and studied journalism at Wayland. He returned to work at the Herald obtaining the position of news editor in January 1972 which he held at the time of his death.

He was killed while doing volunteer storm watch for REACT. In recognition of his unselfish sacrifice and service, Bryant was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Citation from the U.S. Department of Defense's Civil Preparedness Agency. U.S. Rep. George Mahon presented the award, on behalf of director John E. Smith, to Bryant's widow, Rita, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Bryant, on April 25, 1973.

The David Bryant Memorial Scholarship was established to assist PHS seniors pursuing a carrer in photography and journalism.
