Obituary

Graveside services for Garvin W. Bridges, 85, longtime resident of Hale Center, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Hale Center Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Cameron officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Hale Center. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Thursday. Mr. Bridges died Monday, July 5, 2010, at Legend of the Plains Nursing Home in Hale Center. He was born April 28, 1925 in Hale Center. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-46 during WWII. He married Evelyn Grisham on Dec. 15, 1951, in Clovis, N.M. He was a mechanic for Roy Uptergrove's Auto before working for Garrison Oil Company for 20 years, retiring in 1984. He served on the Hale Center Civil Defense for 50 years and last month was named honorary member. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Bridges of Hale Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin Frazier and Mertie Bridges; two brothers, Marvin and Melvin; and a sister, Nancy Stricklin. The family suggests memorial contributions to Interim Home Health Hospice, 2606 Yonkers, Plainview, TX 79072.
