Mrs. Bishop, a resident of Plainview for the past 40 years, died at 3:55 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2005, in Plainview Healthcare Center. Nina Chloe Bishop was born to Clarence and Clora Tharp on Oct. 31, 1912, in Beaver County, Okla. Nina was the third of five daughters. In 1924, Clarence moved the family from the homestead farm to Hutchinson, Kan., to provide a better education for the girls. Nina graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1930. She was a member of the National Honor Society. On Sept. 1, 1934, she married Dean Francis Bishop of Syracuse, Kan., in Forgan, Okla. They started married life on the farm where Nina was born in the heart of what became known as the "Dust Bowl." A daughter, Elna Faye, was born in 1935 on the farm. After several moves, they were in Lamar, Colo., for the birth of their son, Ivan Dean, in 1940. For virtually all of Nina's life, she was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church and very active in the PTA while her children were in school. She became a lifetime member of the PTA while in Bristol, Colo. She became a lifetime member of the Women's Society of Christian Service, now called United Methodist Women, while in Muleshoe, Texas. Dean and Nina relocated to Plainview in 1963. She has resided in Plainview ever since. Her daughter, Elna, passed away in 1978. Her husband, Dean, passed away in 1982. She was a member of Trinity and Grace United Methodist Church. She taught the Friendship Sunday School Class during most of her time there. She was also an active member of the choir and United Methodist Women where she served as president for several years. She will long be remembered and missed for her kindness, devotion and charity. She leaves a son, Ivan Bishop, and his wife, Barbara, of Irvine, Calif.; a son-in-law, Eid Sweis of Tempe, Ariz.; two sisters, Agnes Brewster of Enid, Okla., and Lila Hunter of Peoria, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Emily Sweis Lind of Prescott, Ariz., Owen Sweis of Tempe, Ariz., Ryan Bishop of San Francisco, Calif., and Kara Cawood of Tustin, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Amanda Lind. The family will meet friends of Nina for viewing at Wood-Dunning Funeral Home between 1 and 3 p.m. Friday.
