Benson, Charles Eugene

Funeral services for Charles E. Benson, 77, former Cotton Center resident, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Ford Chapel of First Baptist Church in Lubbock with the Rev. John Ballard officiating.

Burial will be in the Hale Center Cemetery by Freeman-Abell Funeral Home of Hale Center.

Mr. Benson died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, in Lubbock Health-care Center.

He was born June 25, 1923, in Hale County. He lived in the Cotton Center area and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Serving from 1943 to 1946. He moved to Lubbock in 1955 and practiced law from 1957 to 1998.

He was active in Lubbock Little Theater, a member of First Baptist Church and the Timothy Class and of the Southwest Group.

On Sept. 2, 1944, he married Barbara Shaw Gowing in Cotton Center.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, John Albert Benson of Trophy Club, Mike E. Benson of San Antonio and Dusty Benson of Irving; a daughter, Darla Granberry, M.D., of Lubbock and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Lubbock First Baptist Church parlor on Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time.

Memorials are suggested to a favorite charity.
