She lived in Plainview her entire life. Her mother and her grandparents, R.M. and Amanda Irick, came to Plainview in the late 1800s in a covered wagon. They had the first sod house in Plainview, as the other settlers lived in dugouts. They were charter members of First Baptist Church of Plainview. Elizabeth had six older brothers, thus she had the nickname, "Sis." She attended schools in Plainview and was in the class of 1935. She married Jack Atkins on Feb. 12, 1938, in Clovis, N.M. They lived in Plainview their entire married life. They were married for 45 years before his death in August 1983. She was a homemaker and a member of the Order of Eastern Star and College Heights Baptist Church. She was known for her great sense of humor, her love of life and her candy making, which she continued to do at the age of 91 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her six brothers, Jack, John, Frances, Irick, Ben and Tom Vaughn; and her husband. Those left to cherish her memory are a daughter, Judy Atkins Brownd of Plainview; a son, Tom Atkins, and his wife, Maxine, of Spring, Texas; and three granddaughters, Julie Brownd Loyd and her husband, Jeff, of Aubrey, Texas, Jodie Brownd Blancett of Prosper, Texas, and Jennifer Atkins Stair and her husband, Derick, of Tomball, Texas. She was blessed with four great-grandchildren, Jaycie and Brady Blancett, Lacy Loyd and Hunter Stair. Survivors also include one sister-in-law, Melba Atkins of Plainview, and many loving nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at College Heights Baptist Church in Plainview with the Rev. Don Robertson, pastor, officiating. A visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Kornerstone Funeral Home of Plainview. Memorials may be made to College Heights Baptist Church of Plainview.
