Obituary
Funeral services for Lena Faye Alford, 83, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church chapel with Dr. Travis Hart, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. Mrs. Alford died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, in Covenant Hospital Plainview. She was born March 20, 1921, in Lockney, the daughter of Claud Randall and Leila Sparks Wofford. She attended Lockney schools and graduated in 1939. She attended Howard Payne University in Brownwood and graduated from Wayland Baptist University in 1941 with an associate degree and received a bachelor of arts degree in 1949. She graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary with her master of religious education degree in 1950. She worked for East Texas State University as Baptist Student Union director and at Midwestern University as the Baptist Student Union director and Bible Chair teacher for 15 years and at Wayland Baptist University as assistant vice president for student development and as director of student services for 20 years before retiring in May 1986. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Las Camaradas Club, former president of the Business and Professional Women's Club, and was a volunteer for Hospice of the Plains where she was recognized as Volunteer of the Year in 1995. She also volunteered with VistaCare Hospice and was recognized as Volunteer of the Year in 1999. She married Dallas Alford on Jan. 20, 1943, in Plainview. He died Jan. 6, 1948. Survivors include three nieces, Donna Gladman and husband, Craig, of Amarillo, Vickie Tanner and husband, Daniel, and Wanda McAteel, all of Cleveland, Texas; five nephews, Danny Davis and wife, Jennie, of Littlefield, Gary Norman and wife, June, of Dimmitt, Randy Norman and wife, Minnie, of Phoenix, Ariz., Marvin Wofford and wife, Melinda, of Austin, and David Wofford and wife, Suzanne, of Austin; a great-niece, Jessica Wetzel of Plainview; and several other great-nieces and nephews. A sister, Jewel Dean Davis, also is deceased. The family suggests memorials to VistaCare Hospice, 4418 Olton Road, Plainview, TX 79072.
