Obituary

Pedro Cortez, 80 of Odessa, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2022. A visitation will be held at 6:00pm, Thursday, February 17, 2022, at Templo Sinai. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00pm, Friday, February 18, 2022, at Templo Sinai with Reverend Ignacio Soto, Jr. officiating. Service arrangements are entrusted to Lemons Funeral Home.

Pedro was born on June 29, 1941, in Buda, Texas to Fructoso and Micheala (Hernandez) Cortez. He married Maria Jimenez and they were together for 23 years before separating in 1984. Maria passed away December 20, 2021. The last half of his life he spent with Clara Hernandez and helped her raise two granddaughters, who have four children. He loved them all.

He enjoyed reading the newspaper and was always up to date on current news. He loved going out to eat and buying scratch off lottery tickets. He was an avid Cincinnati Reds and Dallas Cowboys fan.

Pedro is survived by one son, Pedro Rene Cortez, Jr.; three daughters, Velma Cortez, Laura Cortez, and Andrea Cortez all of Lubbock; one sister, Martha Leija of New Mexico; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Maria Jimenez Cortez; one daughter: Belinda Cortez Franco; three brothers, Felipe, Jesse Cortez, and Guadalupe “Porky” Cortez; eight sisters: Trine Regino, Victoria Soto, Alejandra Alcozer, Clemencia Flores, Andrea Cortez, Maximina Cortez, Tota Cortez, and Marta Cortez.
