Obituary

Bettye Frances (Lasater) Johnson was born August 10, 1931, in Wills Point, Texas, to John Wesley and Hattie Myrtle Lasater. She departed this earth on Tuesday, July 21, 2020, at the age of 88. Bettye grew up in Wills Point, Texas, with three brothers, Leon, Jim, and Donald, as well as three sisters, Lucille, Faye, and Della Mae. As a young woman in school, she was very active in her local church and enjoyed participating in church activities with her friends. The Lasater family then moved to Plainview, Texas, where Bettye went to work at an ice cream creamery. There, she met her future husband, Gene Truman Johnson. Bettye and Gene went on to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, her as a switchboard operator. They married on February 14, 1960. The Johnson family then moved to Lubbock, Texas, in 1969, where Bettye was a homemaker for their two children, David and Lisa. Bettye spent her time reading God’s word, faithfully serving others, picking green beans, and making beautiful wedding cakes. Her most memorable cake was for Lisa and her husband, Jeff, at their wedding. But she was also known to make Barbie cakes later in life for her grandchildren, one even rode in the cockpit of a plane on its way to a birthday party. Bettye brought joy and hope everywhere she went.

Bettye was known to her grandchildren and many in the family as “Mamaw”. She is survived by children David Johnson, Lisa (Johnson) Holm, son in law Jeff Holm, grandchildren Katelyn (Holm) Powell, Alayna Holm and Tyler Holm as well as many nieces and nephews that will greatly miss “Mamaw”. Her husband of 59 years, Gene T. Johnson, preceded her in death on November 21, 2019.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Tuesday, July 28, 2020, from 10:00AM to 11:15AM at Lemons Funeral Home, 206 W. 8th St. in Plainview, Texas. Graveside services will follow the viewing at 11:30AM on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at Plainview Cemetery in Plainview, Texas.
