After his birth, Alice taught first and second grade at Hillcrest and College Hill elementary schools for a total of thirty years. She also served the school system as a librarian for three years.

After retirement, Doug and Alice traveled extensively with their close friends, the late Paul and Ralene Leach. Alice crocheted hundreds of baby caps for newborns at Covenant Hospital, Plainview.
