Obituary

Weldon Jay Melton, 72, of Plainview passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2023. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. at Garland Street Church of Christ with Gary Melton officiating and assisted by Steve Barrett. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Monday, January 30, 2023 at Kornerstone Funeral Directors.

Weldon is preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Odena Melton.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Melton of Plainview, Texas; one daughter, Kimmee Brandon and husband Michael of Midland, Texas; one son, Jared Melton and wife Crystal of Canyon, Texas; and two brothers, Gary Melton of Lubbock, Texas and Kenny Melton and wife Shelley of Lubbock, Texas; five grandchildren, Morgan Melton of Studio City, California, Asher Melton of Lubbock, Texas, Jae Karson Brandon of Lubbock, Texas, Camryn Melton of Stillwater, Oklahoma and Blade Brandon of Midland, Texas.

Weldon was born on December 11, 1950 in Plainview, Texas to Dewey and Odena Melton. He married Judy on January 1, 1971 in Hobbs, New Mexico. He attended Lubbock Christian College and graduated from Wayland Baptist College in 1973. He farmed in Hale County for fifty five years. He taught school for two years while farming at the same time. He also had a crop insurance business for several years. He attended Garland Street Church of Christ and served as an elder for 22 years. He served on the Hale County Farm Bureau Board, Cotton Incorporated Board, Plains Cotton Growers Board, Texas Soybean Board, and the Texas Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation Board. He loved farming, singing, civic theater, traveling, going to movies, drinking coffee with his friends, watching his grandkids, and telling “dad jokes.” He will be so missed.
