Obituary

Charles Allen Grubbs joined his Lord and Savior on November 12, 2022, at the age of 82, surrounded by his family in Plainview, Texas. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, December 3, 2022, at 9th and Columbia Church of Christ with Gil Peters officiating. A visitation will take place on Friday, December 2, 2022, at Bartley Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m.

Charles was born on November 10, 1940, to Raymond Hubbard and Abbie Virginia (Neil) Grubbs in O’Donnell, Texas. He grew up with his brothers and sisters in Petersburg, Texas where his parents owned Grubbs Laundromat. He played every sport in high school but was exceptional at football and earned a scholarship. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1960 and shortly after he enlisted in the Army in 1961. He completed his basic training at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, New York before being stationed in Berlin, Germany. Charles was military police and guarded the Berlin Wall. He returned home in 1964 and completed his military career in 1967.

Charles met the love of his life, Cynthia Ann Frazier, in August of 1966 and was married 5 months later on January 20, 1967, in Plainview, Texas. He began working at Occidental Petroleum in Plainview for 6 years where he worked alongside his father-in law, Calvin Frazier. The family moved to Alvin, Texas where he continued working for the same company. Charles retired after 35 years in 2007 and moved back to Plainview to be with family.

He was a member of Alvin Church of Christ for 28 years and a member, usher, and “candy man” at 9th and Columbia Church of Christ since 2007. Charles has a special relationship with his Lord. He always looked forward to Sunday mornings when he could worship with his brothers and sisters in Christ. He stuffed his pockets with smarties and the kids knew that Mr. Grubbs was the man to go to. He was a staple in his church family.

Charles kept busy and could always find a project to do out in his tool shed. You could find him maintaining his yard and even built his own well water system in his backyard in Alvin. He was always behind the camera taking photos of any life event, he never missed one moment. Charles was a constant in his grandchildren’s lives. If he wasn’t working or wasn’t too far, he never missed any school or sporting events. He loved watching them excel and was extremely proud of each one of them. Family was always his priority. Charles came from a large family but also married into one that loved him like he was their own. He enjoyed country music, western movies, and watching football any chance he could, especially The Dallas Cowboys.

Charles will be remembered for his ornery but tender-hearted personality and his love for the Lord and family. The best husband, father, grandpa, uncle, cousin, dear friend, and brother in Christ. Although we know that he is rejoicing with the angels he will be missed until we are with him once again.
