Obituary
Silas Edward Short, 84, of Hale Center, passed away and went to his Heavenly home, on Monday, May 2, 2022. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Hale Center Church of Christ, with Mr. Ben Mereness officiating.
Silas was born east of Hale Center on April 20, 1938, to Bill and Gracie Mae Jones Short. He graduated from Hale Center High School in 1956. He married his best friend and sweetheart, Beth, one week later, June 1, 1956. Silas lived in and around Hale Center for his entire life. He lived in Muleshoe, Texas from 1963 until 1968. He moved to Sweetwater in 1968 for a very short time. He moved to Post, Texas in August of 1968 when he purchased Short Hardware. Silas had worked for Higginbotham-Bartlett lumber company for some 18 years, managing both the Hale Center and Post locations.
Silas went back to school in 1983, completing his B.A. in 1985, his M.A. in 1997, and his Doctorate in 2001. He had been a church of Christ minister for over 30 years. He had served on the Post ISD school board for almost 10 years, the Rotary Club, scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America, and 4-H leader, when he moved back to Hale Center. He was a member of the Hale Center Lions Club, serving as President in 1994. He served on the Senior Citizens board for a number of years. Above all else, Silas was a member of the church of Christ.
Silas was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Gracie Mae, his first wife, Beth, his second wife, Sherry Jo, and third wife, Judy.
Silas is survived by four sons: Zack and wife Sherry of Colorado Springs, Mark and wife Carol of Post, Bill and wife Mary of Post, and Shiloh of Lubbock. He was blessed with five grandsons, four granddaughters, 14 great-grandchildren, and a host of good friends.
Silas donated his body to the Texas Tech Medical School for research. His remains will be buried between Beth and Sherry in the Hale Center Cemetery.
