Obituary

Jerry Lee Logan, 80, of Hale Center, departed Thursday, March 9, 2023, in Plainview, Texas. According to his wishes, a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements made by Bartley Funeral Home.

Jerry entered this life on February 20, 1943, the youngest of eight children born to J.C. and Othena Logan. He grew up on the family farm in Mayfield. He attended schools at Hale Center, graduating from Hale Center High School in 1961. After attending Texas Tech University, he returned to Hale Center to farm for the next 30 years. On July 20, 1963, he married Nicki Bruce. Though this relationship was not permanent, they raised three amazing children whom they adored. Whether it was fishing, working on cars, or encouraging growth (his fields, yard and kids), all was done with a laid-back approach and all the time in the world. While Nicki was molding the children into “respectable” citizens; Jerry was loading them and their friends on car hoods and tractor tires in order to launch them through the snow behind a pickup or tractor. The summers would find him hauling the kids to the lake to water ski (rumor is his record is seven skiers at once). Jerry’s hobbies were varied and included woodworking, making stained glass, playing pool, and sitting in the yard watching the world while cutting out weeds with his pocketknife.

Jerry loved his community and served on boards and groups including board of directors of Mayfield Coop Gin, member service committee at South Plains Electric Coop, Farmers Home Administration loan committee, Hale Center Lions Club, Lemond Masonic Lodge, Hillside Acres Country Club and Eastern Star. He also was an active member and adult leader of 4-H and FFA as well as Owl Boosters and Owl Band Boosters.

He later became an independent truck driver where he enjoyed seeing more of the country but was always glad to get back where the trees didn’t obstruct the view.

Known as Gigi and Grandaddy, his grandbabies were the light of his life and his reason for being. He would take them on grand adventures at every opportunity and loved them “just a lil bit.”

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Juanita Hardage, Geraldine Elmore, Agnes Brock and Doris Logan; and three brothers, J.C. Logan Jr., Jack Logan and Billy Logan.

His legacy is continued by his daughters, Alicea Logan (Tim) Masters of Cotton Center, and Nicole Logan (Jory) Russell of Hale Center; a son Lee (Lisa) Logan of Amherst; grandchildren, Jordan (Taylor) Olson of Cotopaxi, Colorado; Emily Russell and Lara Russell, both of Hale Center; Lacee (Bo) Bryant of Littlefield, Danielle (Dilon) Chancellor of Slaton, Lane Logan of Amherst; five great grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Judy Logan of Hale Center, numerous nieces and nephews, and “that damned cat,” Milo.
